Installing USB Drivers

Most people do not have to install USB drivers--it is only necessary if your computer does not have an Ethernet connection, or if you want to connect two computers to a 1-port modem.

If you only want to connect one computer, it is better to use Ethernet than USB. Your computer has Ethernet if you have something that looks like a phone jack, but a little bit bigger, on the back of your computer. If you have this, use Ethernet, not USB. Skip this section and go on to "Connecting Cables".

If you want to hook up two computers to a 1-port modem, you only need to install the USB drivers on the computer that will be connected using the USB connection.

Before you begin, please make sure you have identified your modem by following the instructions on the "Identify My Modem" page.

Follow the instructions that apply to your modem type:

Instructions for Zoom X4 (1-port)

The Zoom X4 only has drivers for Windows. If you have a Mac, you must connect it to the modem's Ethernet port.

Before you begin, make sure that you uninstall any old USB DSL modem drivers that you may have on your computer. You can do this from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

Put the Zoom CD in your CDROM drive. The Zoom software should start running automatically. If it doesn't, click on your "Start" button, then click on "Run", type "D:\setup.exe" in the box, then hit the ENTER key on your keyboard. (If your CDROM drive is not your D drive, then substitute the correct drive letter for your CDROM drive instead of D.)

You should see the following screen:

Click on "English". You should see the following screen:

Click on "Installation Wizard". You should see the following screen:

Click on "ADSL X4 Modem". You may have to wait a second, then you should see the following screen:

Click on "Next", and then wait a while until you see the following screen:

Click on "Finish". The USB drivers should now be installed. You may close any windows that remain open and remove the CD from the drive.

You can now follow the instructions for "Connecting Cables"

Instructions for Zoom X5 (4-port)

The Zoom X5 only has drivers for Windows. If you have a Mac, you must connect it to the modem's Ethernet port.

Before you begin, make sure that you uninstall any old USB DSL modem drivers that you may have on your computer. You can do this from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

Put the Zoom CD in your CDROM drive. The Zoom software should start running automatically. If it doesn't, click on your "Start" button, then click on "Run", type "D:\setup.exe" in the box, then hit the ENTER key on your keyboard. (If your CDROM drive is not your D drive, then substitute the correct drive letter for your CDROM drive instead of D.)

You should see the following screen:

Click on "English". You should see the following screen:

Instructions for Zoom X6 (4-port + wireless)

The Zoom X6 does not have a USB port, so you cannot connect a computer to it using USB. Do not install the USB drivers. Please use Ethernet instead. If your computer does not have an Ethernet card (NIC card) you can have one added to your computer at a computer store.

Instructions for SpeedStream 4200 (1-port)

The SpeedStream 4200 has drivers for Windows and Mac, however the following instructions are for Windows only. If you have a Mac, you can follow the instructions in the manual that came with the modem.

Before you begin, make sure that you uninstall any old USB DSL modem drivers that you may have on your computer. You can do this from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

Put the SpeedStream CD in your CDROM drive. The SpeedStream software should start running automatically. If it doesn't, click on your "Start" button, then click on "Run", type "D:\setup.exe" in the box, then hit the ENTER key on your keyboard. (If your CDROM drive is not your D drive, then substitute the correct drive letter for your CDROM drive instead of D.)

You should see the following screen:

Click on "Accept". You should see the following screen:

Click on "Next". Wait for a while for the software to check your system. Soon, you should see the following screen:

Click on "Next". Some files will be copied, and then you should see the following screen:

At this point you must connect the cables as described in the "Connecting Cables" instructions. Once the cables are connected and the modem is turned on, you should see a "Found New Hardware" window for a little while. It should go away on its own when it is done. You should then see the following screen:

Click on "Finished". You are now connected using USB and you can surf the Internet! Don't forget to remove the CD from your CDROM drive.

Instructions for SpeedStream 6520 (4-port + wireless)

The SpeedStream 6520 has drivers for Windows and Mac, however the following instructions are for Windows only. If you have a Mac, you can follow the instructions in the manual that came with the modem.

Instructions for Siemens Gigaset SE567 (4-port + wireless)

The Siemens Gigaset SE567 does not have a USB port, so you cannot connect a computer to it using USB. Do not install the USB drivers. Please use Ethernet instead. If your computer does not have an Ethernet card (NIC card) you can have one added to your computer at a computer store.
